Sumatera — Sumatra — is the great western island of Indonesia, the sixth largest island in the world and one of the most rewarding for adventurous travellers. This guide treats it as a single geographical unit spanning its many provinces, from Aceh at the northern tip down through North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, Bengkulu and South Sumatra to Lampung in the south, where the island faces Java across the Sunda Strait.
The island's spine is the Bukit Barisan, a long volcanic range running its full length, studded with active peaks, crater lakes and equatorial rainforest. Sumatra holds some of Indonesia's most iconic natural sites: vast Lake Toba, the largest volcanic lake on earth, formed by a supervolcano eruption; the steaming jungles of Gunung Leuser National Park, one of the last places where wild orang-utans, tigers, rhinos and elephants share the same forest; and a long coastline of surf islands. It is also a cultural mosaic — the staunchly Islamic Acehnese, the lakeside Batak peoples, the matrilineal Minangkabau, and many more.
For travellers, Sumatra is wilder and less polished than Java or Bali, with longer distances and rougher roads, but it delivers in raw experience: orang-utan trekking, volcano landscapes, indigenous cultures and world-class waves. It rewards those who slow down and travel overland.
When is the best time to visit?
Sumatra straddles the equator and is generally wet, but the drier season runs roughly from May to September across most of the island — the best window for jungle trekking, volcano scenery and Lake Toba. The wetter months fall around October to April with frequent heavy rain, slippery trekking trails and a higher risk of landslides on mountain roads.
The dry-season haze from peatland and plantation fires can affect parts of central and eastern Sumatra (Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra) between roughly July and October in bad years, occasionally reducing visibility and air quality. Highland areas — around Lake Toba, Berastagi and Bukittinggi — are pleasantly cool and need a light layer in the evenings, while the coasts are hot and humid. Surf seasons on the western islands such as the Mentawais are best from around April to October. Islamic holidays (Ramadan, Eid) shape the calendar, with observance strongest in conservative Aceh.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Sumatra's size means a mix of flying and overland travel. Major airports include Medan (Kualanamu), Padang, Pekanbaru, Palembang and Banda Aceh, with frequent domestic flights linking them — the fastest way to cover the long north-south distances.
Overland, the Trans-Sumatran Highway runs the length of the island, increasingly supplemented by toll expressways in the north and south, but cross-country journeys are still long: Medan to Lake Toba (Parapat) is about 175 km and four to five hours, while Medan to Bukittinggi is a full day's drive. Long-distance buses and shared minivans (travel) connect the towns, with fares typically Rp 50,000–250,000 (US$3–16) depending on distance and comfort. A limited passenger rail network operates in North Sumatra and in the south around Palembang and Lampung. Within cities, angkot minibuses, ojek motorbike taxis and ride-hailing apps (Grab, Gojek) handle short trips cheaply. Ferries link Sumatra to Java (Bakauheni–Merak) and out to the offshore islands.
Where should you go?
- Medan — Sumatra's largest city and main northern gateway, gritty but well-connected.
- Lake Toba (Parapat & Samosir Island) — the colossal volcanic lake and heartland of Batak culture.
- Bukit Lawang — jungle village on the edge of Gunung Leuser, famed for orang-utan trekking.
- Berastagi — cool highland town beneath the volcanoes Sibayak and Sinabung.
- Banda Aceh — the devoutly Islamic provincial capital at Sumatra's northern tip.
- Pulau Weh (Sabang) — a relaxed island off Aceh with excellent diving and snorkelling.
- Bukittinggi — highland traveller hub in the Minangkabau heartland of West Sumatra.
- Padang — coastal West Sumatra capital, home of Padang cuisine.
- Mentawai Islands — offshore archipelago of world-class surf and indigenous culture.
- Palembang — historic South Sumatra capital on the Musi River, once the Srivijaya capital.
- Pekanbaru — provincial capital of oil-rich Riau.
- Kerinci Seblat National Park — vast park surrounding Sumatra's highest volcano, Mount Kerinci.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Sumatra's most celebrated food is Padang cuisine from West Sumatra, served across Indonesia and the world: a spread of small dishes laid out on the table, of which the star is rendang — beef simmered for hours in coconut milk and spices until dark and intense, regularly named among the world's best dishes. Gulai curries, fried chicken and fiery sambal lado round out the experience.
Beyond Padang, the regional range is wide: Aceh contributes the rich, complex mie Aceh (spiced noodles with seafood or beef) and aromatic Acehnese curries; the Batak around Lake Toba serve distinctive dishes such as arsik (fish cooked with andaliman "Batak pepper") and saksang; Palembang is famous for pempek, springy fish cakes served with a tangy dark vinegar sauce. Street food and rumah makan meals are inexpensive — typically Rp 25,000–60,000 (US$1.50–4). Halal food is the norm, especially in Aceh and the Minangkabau areas; Batak cuisine includes pork and is the main exception. Vegetarians will find vegetable gulai, jackfruit curry, tempe and tofu, but should ask, as fish and meat dominate.
What is the culture like?
Sumatra is a patchwork of strong cultures. Aceh is the most devoutly Islamic region in Indonesia, with a proud history of resistance and a distinctive culture expressed in the rapid, percussive Saman dance. The Batak peoples around Lake Toba have a striking heritage of carved-roof rumah bolon houses, ulos ceremonial textiles and powerful traditional music. The Minangkabau of West Sumatra are the world's largest matrilineal society, known for buffalo-horn-roofed rumah gadang longhouses and gold-threaded songket weaving. Palembang carries the legacy of the Srivijaya maritime empire.
Crafts are exceptional across the island — Batak ulos, Minangkabau songket, and Palembang's songket and lacquerware. The festival calendar follows the Islamic year in most regions (Ramadan, Eid celebrated widely), supplemented by Batak Christian holidays around Lake Toba and lively local events such as Lake Toba cultural festivals and the spectacular pacu jawi cow races of West Sumatra during the dry season.

WhatsAppWhat are the standout experiences?
- Trek to wild orang-utans at Bukit Lawang, walking into the rainforest of Gunung Leuser to see one of the last great apes of Asia in the wild.
- Cross Lake Toba to Samosir Island, the largest volcanic lake on earth, exploring Batak villages, carved tombs and traditional houses.
- Climb a Sumatran volcano, hiking Mount Sibayak or Sinabung's foothills from Berastagi, or tackling lofty Mount Kerinci.
- Dive or snorkel off Pulau Weh, the laid-back island at Indonesia's northwestern tip with vivid reefs and the symbolic "Kilometre Zero" monument.
- Eat Padang-style in Bukittinggi or Padang, ordering the famous parade of dishes and tasting rendang in its homeland.
