How do you get there?

Buses from Padang (5 hours) and Bukittinggi (2 hours) connect to Sawahlunto via winding roads.

What are the things to do?

The Sawahlunto Rail and Train Museum, in the old Dutch colonial railway station. The Mbah Soero mine, a former ventilation shaft now open as a guided museum tour 35 metres underground into the old coal workings. The broader historic mining infrastructure that earned the town its 2019 UNESCO listing as part of the Ombilin Coal Mining Heritage.

Tour the train museum and the Mbah Soero mine. A heritage steam locomotive runs a short scenic route to Muara Kalaban station (through the Kalam tunnel) on a limited schedule — reportedly around twice a month; check locally for current dates. Visit the surrounding traditional Minangkabau villages.
