Bandar Lampung is the capital and largest city of Lampung province at the southern tip of Sumatra. It is the main gateway for travelers arriving from Java via the Bakauheni ferry. How do you get there?

By ferry

The Bakauheni ferry port is about 1.5 hours south. Ferries from Merak (Java) run 24/7 (2 hours crossing). Buses and taxis connect from Bakauheni to Bandar Lampung.

By plane

Radin Inten II Airport (TKG) has flights from Jakarta and other Indonesian cities.

By bus

Bus terminal Rajabasa connects Bandar Lampung to cities across Sumatra.

Ride-hailing apps, angkot, and taxis are available. The city is hilly — walking long distances is not recommended.

What are the things to do?

Teluk Lampung waterfront. The Krakatau Monument (symbolizing the 1883 eruption). The Lampung Museum (cultural artifacts). The Lembah Hijau (Green Valley) recreation area. The views from Bukit Randu hill.

Take a boat tour to Anak Krakatau volcano. Surfing and snorkeling at nearby beaches (Teluk Kiluan, Tanjung Setia). Visit Way Kambas National Park for elephants. Explore the traditional fishing villages around the bay.

Where to eat?

Seruit (grilled fish with tempoyak fermented durian and sambal terasi) is the signature Lampung dish. Other specialties include sate ikan (fish satay), geguduh (fried cassava snack), and gulai taboh (Lampung-style curry).

Where to drink?

Kopi Lampung (Lampung coffee) is excellent. Serve hot or iced with palm sugar. Fresh young coconut water is ubiquitous.

Lampung is famous for its coffee — buy robusta and arabica from local plantations. Tapis (traditional Lampung handwoven cloth) is a distinctive souvenir. The Pasar Bambu Kuning market sells local crafts.
