Why visit Medan?

Medan is the capital of North Sumatra province and the largest city on Sumatra island outside of Java. It is a bustling, multi-ethnic metropolis with a population of about 2.5 million. The city is a melting pot of Batak, Malay, Javanese, Chinese, and Indian cultures, reflected in its architecture, food, and daily life. Medan's economy is driven by trade, manufacturing, and agriculture (palm oil, rubber, and tobacco). For travelers, it is the main gateway to the cultural highlands of the Batak region, Lake Toba, and the jungles of Gunung Leuser National Park.
