Sungai Penuh is an independent city in Jambi province, an enclave surrounded by (but administratively separate from, since 2008) Kerinci Regency, whose own seat is the town of Siulak. Sungai Penuh sits in the Kerinci Valley near Mount Kerinci (3,805 m), the highest volcano in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. It's the main access point for Kerinci Seblat National Park and Mount Kerinci treks.

Buses from Padang (7 hours), Jambi (6 hours), and Bengkulu (5 hours) connect to Sungai Penuh.
