Metro

Metro is a planned city in Lampung province, originating as a Dutch colonial-era transmigration center: beginning in 1936, Dutch authorities settled Javanese migrants here to ease overcrowding on Java. The city's name is disputed between two origins — Dutch centrum (center), reflecting its position roughly midway between Central and East Lampung, or Javanese mitro (friend/partner), reflecting the mixed-origin settlers who founded it. Its wide, straight, grid-planned streets reflect this deliberate colonial-era design, and today Metro is known within Lampung as an education center with a concentration of schools and campuses, alongside a strong Javanese-influenced culture typical of Lampung's broader transmigration heritage (roughly three-quarters of the province's population descends from Javanese, Sundanese, and Balinese migrants).
