Padang
Sumatera, Indonesia
Why visit Padang?
Padang is the capital of West Sumatra province and the largest city on the western coast of Sumatra. It is the cultural heartland of the Minangkabau people, the world's largest matrilineal society. Padang is famous for its dramatic natural setting between the Indian Ocean and the Bukit Barisan mountain range, its distinctive architecture with gonjong (pointed roof) traditional houses, and most famously, for Padang cuisine (Masakan Padang), which is arguably Indonesia's most exported regional cuisine. The city is the gateway to the Mentawai Islands for world-class surfing and to the Minangkabau highlands including Bukittinggi and Lake Maninjau.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to eat?
Padang cuisine is one of Indonesia's most celebrated regional cuisines, known for its rich, spicy coconut-milk curries — served in the iconic nasi Padang style (dishes laid out, you pay for what you eat). Must-tries include rendang (slow-cooked beef in coconut milk and spices), sate Padang (satay with thick yellow sauce), gulai (curry), dendeng batokok (pounded spiced beef), sambal lado mudo (green chili sambal), kalio (like rendang but saucier), and ikan bilih (a tiny lake fish, fried crispy). The rumah makan Padang restaurants are ubiquitous.
Where to drink?
Teh talua (egg milk tea) is a Minangkabau specialty — a sweet drink with egg yolk, sugar, and lime. Kopi susu Padang is very sweet and strong. Fresh young coconut water is available everywhere.
