Why visit Bukittinggi?

Bukittinggi is a highland city in West Sumatra, sitting at about 930 m above sea level in the Minangkabau highlands. It was a popular hill station during Dutch colonial times and is one of the most scenic cities in Sumatra. The city is surrounded by volcanoes, notably Mount Singgalang and Mount Merapi, with dramatic views of the Sianok Canyon. Bukittinggi is the cultural center of the Minangkabau people, known for their distinctive pointed-roof architecture, matrilineal society, and fiery cuisine. The climate is cool and refreshing year-round.

How do you get there?

By bus

The main bus terminal, Terminal Aur Kuning, connects Bukittinggi to Padang (2.5 hours), Medan (14 hours), Pekanbaru (5 hours), and other Sumatran cities.

By car

From Padang, the drive is about 2.5 hours via a winding mountain road with spectacular views. From Medan, it's a long 14-hour drive.

By plane

The nearest airport is Minangkabau International Airport (PDG) near Padang, about 2.5 hours by bus or car.

Bukittinggi is compact and walkable. Ride-hailing apps (Gojek, Grab) are available. Ojek (motorcycle taxis) and becak (cycle rickshaws) are common for short trips. The local angkot (minivans) cover city routes.

What are the things to do?

The Sianok Canyon (Ngarai Sianok), a dramatic, lush canyon that cuts through the Bukit Barisan range — best viewed from the Panorama Park lookouts. The Japanese Caves (Lobang Jepang), a 2-km network of tunnels used by Japanese forces during WWII. Fort de Kock, a Dutch colonial fort built in 1825. The clock tower (Jam Gadang), the iconic landmark of Bukittinggi built in 1926. The Bundo Kanduang Museum, housed in a traditional Rumah Gadang, showcasing Minangkabau culture. The Pasar Atas and Pasar Bawah markets. The Great Mosque of Bukittinggi.

Take a morning walk along the Sianok Canyon rim. Visit the nearby Harau Valley (about 2 hours north) for dramatic granite cliffs, waterfalls, and trekking. Explore the village of Pandai Sikat to see traditional songket weaving. Take a day trip to Lake Maninjau (about 1.5 hours south) for a scenic crater lake experience, cycling the famous 44-km rim road, or learning about windsurfing. Visit Kota Gadang for silver filigree crafts.

Where to eat?

Nasi kapau (rice with various Minangkabau dishes, similar to nasi Padang but with Bukittinggi specialties) is the must-try dish. Dendeng batokok (pounded spicy beef), gulai itiak (duck curry), sate Padang, katupek sayua (rice cakes in vegetable soup), and rakik maco (spicy cassava crackers) are local favorites. The night market on Jalan Sudirman is excellent for local food.

Where to drink?

Teh talua (tea with egg yolk, sugar, and lime) is the signature drink — rich, sweet, and energizing. Kopi susu (sweet milk coffee) is also popular. The cool climate makes hot drinks particularly welcome.

Where to stay?

Bukittinggi's accommodation is concentrated around the Jam Gadang clock tower. Budget options cost Rp 100,000–250,000. Mid-range hotels (Hotel Pusako, Grand Rocky, Novotel Bukittinggi) cost Rp 300,000–700,000. The Hills Hotel and similar offer panoramic canyon views (USD 60–120). The old colonial-era hotel Peristiwa is a heritage institution.

What should you buy?

Bukittinggi is great for Minangkabao handicrafts. Pasar Atas (Upper Market) and Pasar Bawah (Lower Market) sell songket fabric, silver jewelry (from Kota Gadang), carved wood items, and traditional clothes. Pandai Sikat is the weaving center for songket. Souvenirs include keris (daggers), horn carvings, and khas Bukittinggi cake (karak kaliang).

Where to go next?

From Bukittinggi, head to Padang (2.5 hours) for the airport or the Mentawai surfing islands. The Harau Valley (about 2 hours north) is a natural paradise for hiking and photography. Lake Maninjau is 1.5 hours south. Continue north to Riau province and Pekanbaru (5 hours) or make the epic overland journey to Medan (14 hours) via the often-rough interior roads.
