Why visit Way Kambas National Park?

Way Kambas National Park is the oldest national park in Indonesia, located in Lampung province at the southern tip of Sumatra. It is famous for the Sumatran Elephant Conservation Center. The park covers 1,300 sq km of lowland rainforest, swamps, and grassland, and is one of the best places in Sumatra to see wild elephants.

How do you get there?

From Bandar Lampung, take a bus east to Sukadana (2 hours), then a local minibus to the park entrance (30 minutes). The drive from Bakauheni ferry port is about 2 hours.

What are the things to do?

The Sumatran Elephant Conservation Center (PLG) where domesticated elephants are trained and cared for. Wild elephant herds (morning/evening at the Way Kambas River). The Labuhan Ratu beach (within the park). Rhino viewing at the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary.

Elephant rides, bathing, and training demonstrations. Jungle trekking (half-day to full-day). Night safari to spot wildlife. Rhino trek at the Sanctuary (limited spots, book ahead). Birdwatching.

Where to stay?

Basic cottages and guesthouses inside the park. The elephant center has simple accommodation (book through the park office). Bandar Lampung has better options.

Where to go next?

Bandar Lampung is 2 hours west. Bakauheni ferry port for Java (2 hours). Continue to the Krakatau Volcano boat tours.
