Barus
Sumatera, Indonesia
Why visit Barus?
Barus is a small town and district in Central Tapanuli Regency, on the west coast of North Sumatra. From roughly the 7th century until the 17th century it was a major regional trading port, best known for exporting camphor (locally kapur barus) — a resin so prized that Marco Polo reportedly wrote it sold for its weight in gold. Barus is also considered one of the earliest points of Islamic arrival in the Indonesian archipelago, and the hilltop Papan Tinggi tomb complex nearby — seven graves dated to the 7th–8th centuries, one attributed to Shaykh Mahmud ibn 'Abd al-Rahman — is a recognised religious-tourism and historical site with Arabic and Persian inscriptions. Today Barus is a quiet district town; little remains above ground of the old port itself, and its significance is mostly historical and archaeological rather than visible in a built townscape.

What are the things to do?
The Papan Tinggi tomb complex (Makam Papan Tinggi), a hilltop site of seven graves dated to the 7th–8th centuries, is Barus's best-documented historic attraction and a recognised religious-tourism site. Other old Islamic gravesites and inscriptions from Barus's trading-port era are scattered around the district.
