Why visit Tebing Tinggi?

Tebing Tinggi is a city on the route between Medan and Pematangsiantar in North Sumatra. Its name means "high cliff" (from the Malay "tebing", cliff, and "tinggi", high), referring to the local terrain. It is one of the older towns in the province, having grown since at least the 17th century as a transit point for traders moving between the Sumatran interior and the coast, and later developed under the Dutch colonial era as a trade and administrative center serving the surrounding rubber and palm oil estates. An old railway station in the city is a surviving landmark from that period as a transport hub. Today the city functions primarily as a commercial and transit town, and it is also known locally for lemang, a glutinous rice dish cooked in bamboo.
