Mentawai Islands

The Mentawai Islands are a chain of four main islands off the west coast of Sumatra (Siberut, Sipora, North Pagai, South Pagai), part of West Sumatra province. They are world-famous for some of the best surfing waves on the planet, with world-class left and right breaks including HTs, Lance's Left, Macaronis, and Rags Left. The Mentawai people have a distinct culture with unique traditions, tattoos, and animist beliefs.

Ferries from Padang's Muara Harbour to the Mentawai Islands (Siberut, Sipora) take 4-10 hours depending on the boat. Speedboats take 3-4 hours. Surf charters and liveaboard boats depart from Padang. Flights from Padang to Siberut (Rokot Airport) or Sipora (Sipora Airport) — limited schedule.

Between islands, boat is the only option. On each island, motorcycles and boats are used. Surf charters provide boat-based accommodation.

Surf resorts on Sipora and the Pagai Islands offer all-inclusive packages (USD 50–150/night). Surf charter boats offer accommodation on board (USD 150–300/night). Basic homestays are available in Siberut. Budget options are limited.

Return to Padang (ferry or speedboat). From Padang, head to Bukittinggi or continue to the Batam/Singapore route.
