Kutacane is the capital (regency seat) of Southeast Aceh (Aceh Tenggara) Regency, sitting in a valley of the Bukit Barisan mountain range at roughly 270 m elevation. It is the ancestral home of the Alas people, and functions as the main gateway town for travelers heading into Gunung Leuser National Park, most commonly via the village of Ketambe nearby along the Alas River.
