Sabang

Sabang is the main town on Weh Island (Pulau Weh), located off the northern tip of Sumatra in Aceh province. It is the westernmost point of Indonesia and a popular destination for diving, snorkeling, and beach relaxation. The island is volcanic with beautiful coral reefs, clear waters, and a laid-back atmosphere.

Fast ferries from Banda Aceh's Ulee Lheue port run to Sabang (45 minutes). Slower ferries also available.

Rent a scooter (Rp 100,000/day) to explore the island. Becak (motorized rickshaws) for short trips. Ojek for longer distances.

Weh Island's beautiful bays — Iboih, Gapang, and Sumur Tiga. The Kilometre Zero (Titik Nol Kilometer) monument at Sabang — the westernmost point of Indonesia. The Japanese WWII bunkers at several locations. The Pulau Rubiah marine park.

Diving and snorkeling — Rubiah Island has excellent coral reefs with abundant marine life including sea turtles, reef sharks, and colorful fish. Diving courses and trips are available from operators in Iboih and Gapang. Hike up to the Sabang hill viewpoints. Relax at the beach bungalows.

Seafood (grilled fish, squid, prawns) at beachfront warungs. Local Acehnese dishes: mie Aceh, nasi gurih, ayam tangkap.

Iboih and Gapang have beach bungalows (Rp 200,000–600,000). Sabang town has budget hotels. Eco-resorts like Rubiah Eco Resort offer package deals for diving.

Return to Banda Aceh (45 minutes by fast ferry). From there, continue to Lhoknga for surfing or Takengon for coffee country.
