Why visit?

Northern Uganda is a vast and historically significant region stretching from the Nile River to the South Sudan border and from Lake Kyoga to the Kenyan frontier. The region is home to the Acholi, Langi, Karamojong, Lugbara, and Madi peoples, each with distinct languages and cultural traditions. Northern Uganda is emerging from decades of conflict and is increasingly recognised for its wildlife, cultural heritage, and natural beauty.

The landscape varies from the lush, fertile Acholi plains around Gulu to the semi-arid, rocky Karamoja region in the east. Kidepo Valley National Park, one of Africa's finest wilderness areas, lies in the far north-east. The region also features the vast wetlands of Lake Kyoga and the lush West Nile districts along the Congo border.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit is during the dry season (December–February and June–August), essential for wildlife viewing in Kidepo Valley National Park. The rainy seasons (March–May and September–November) can make roads difficult, particularly in Karamoja. The Acholi cultural festival (usually June) is a highlight for those interested in northern Ugandan culture.

Roads in Karamoja are mostly marram and can be challenging after rain. Domestic flights connect Kampala's Entebbe airport to Gulu, Arua, and Moroto.

What should you eat?

Northern Ugandan cuisine is distinct from the rest of the country. Millet bread (kwon) is the staple, often eaten with groundnut sauce, sim sim paste, or goat meat stew. Malakwang (a sour leafy green vegetable) is an Acholi speciality. In Karamoja, sorghum and milk from cattle are dietary staples. Fish from Lake Kyoga and the Nile River features prominently in the region. Arua and the West Nile area are known for their own distinct culinary traditions.

What is the culture like?

The Acholi people celebrate the annual Acholi Cultural Festival (Gulu, usually June) with traditional dance, music, and storytelling. The Karamojong have vibrant ceremonies involving cattle, dancing, and body ornamentation. The Laropi Music Festival in West Nile and various local wrestling events are notable cultural gatherings. The region is also known for its traditional oral poetry and the nanga (a type of harp).
