Yumbe is a town in the West Nile sub-region of north-western Uganda, serving as the administrative headquarters of Yumbe District. The town is near the border with South Sudan and has been a major centre for refugee settlements, hosting thousands of South Sudanese refugees in camps across the district. The area is primarily agricultural, with cassava, millet, and groundnuts as the main crops.

The Lugbara people are the dominant ethnic group, and Lugbara is the primary local language. The town has a slow, unhurried pace of life.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Arua Airport (RUA IATA), about 90 km south.

By Train

There is no passenger train service to Yumbe.

By Car / Road

Matatus from Arua serve Yumbe (1.5–2 hours). Roads are a mix of paved and marram.

Boda-bodas are the main form of transport. The town centre is small and walkable.
