Amara (also known as the Amhara Region) is a major cultural and historical region in northern Ethiopia, home to some of the country's most iconic destinations. It encompasses the north-western and north-central highlands, including Lake Tana (the source of the Blue Nile), the Simien Mountains, and the ancient imperial cities of Gondar and Lalibela.
The region is named after the Amhara people, one of Ethiopia's largest ethnolinguistic groups. Amharic, the working language of Ethiopia, originates here. The landscape ranges from the rugged peaks of the Simien Mountains (Ethiopia's highest range) to the fertile plains around Lake Tana and the deep gorges of the Blue Nile. The region has a temperate highland climate with a rainy season from June to September.
When is the best time to visit?
October to March is the dry season and the best time for trekking in the Simien Mountains and visiting historical sites. The rainy season (June–September) brings heavy downpours that can make roads challenging, but the landscape is lush and the Simien peaks are especially dramatic. Key festivals such as Timkat (January) and Meskel (September) draw large crowds.

Buses connect major towns: Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar (555 km, 10 hours), Bahir Dar to Gondar (170 km, 3 hours), and Bahir Dar to Lalibela via Woreta (310 km, 8 hours). WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Amara shares the core Ethiopian cuisine of injera with wat and tibs, but the region has its own specialties. Fresh fish from Lake Tana (especially the Nile tilapia) is a highlight in Bahir Dar and nearby towns. Highlands around Gondar and Lalibela produce excellent honey used in tej (honey wine). Roasted barley (kolo) is a common snack. Doro wat (spicy chicken stew) is served on festive occasions.
What is the culture like?
Amara is the heartland of Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. Major festivals include Timkat (Epiphany, 19 January), celebrated with great fervour at Gondar's Fasiladas Bath; Meskel (Finding of the True Cross, 27 September), marked by bonfires on hillsides; and Genna (Ethiopian Christmas, 7 January). Lalibela draws pilgrims on these feast days for all-night ceremonies in the rock-hewn churches.
