Lalibela

Amara, Ethiopia

Why visit Lalibela?

Lalibela is one of Ethiopia's most sacred and astonishing destinations, famous for its 11 monolithic rock-hewn churches carved directly into the ground in the 12th and 13th centuries. Known as the "New Jerusalem," the town was conceived by King Lalibela as a pilgrimage site after Muslim conquests made travel to the Holy Land dangerous for Ethiopian Christians.

The churches are UNESCO World Heritage-listed and remain an active place of worship. Lalibela sits at about 2,600 m elevation in the Lasta Mountains of the Amara Region, with a cool, temperate climate.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Lalibela Airport (LLI IATA) is about 20 km north of town. Ethiopian Airlines operates daily flights from Addis Ababa (1 hour, 15 minutes) and connections from Bahir Dar and Gondar. Airport transfers by minibus cost around 300–400 birr.

By Car / Road

The road from Bahir Dar to Lalibela (314 km) takes about 8 hours via Woreta and Gashena. From Addis Ababa, the drive is 700 km (12+ hours). Daily buses run from Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar, and Gondar.

Lalibela is compact and the main church cluster is walkable. Bajajs and minibuses serve the airport, the town, and the second church cluster. A guide is recommended for the church complex.

  • Timkat and Genna celebrations: Lalibela's festivals are deeply atmospheric, with priests, pilgrims, and all-night ceremonies.
