Sekota

Amara, Ethiopia

Why visit Sekota?

Sekota is a remote highland town in the Amara Region of northern Ethiopia, serving as the administrative centre of the Wag Hemra Zone. It sits at a high elevation with a cool climate and is one of the least-visited parts of Ethiopia. The surrounding zone is known for its ancient rock-hewn churches, similar to but far less visited than those in Lalibela.

The town is isolated, with unpaved roads connecting it to the main transport network. This isolation has preserved a traditional way of life and authentic highland culture.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest major airport is Lalibela (LLI IATA), about 100 km south-west, with daily flights from Addis Ababa.

By Car / Road

Sekota is reached by unpaved roads from Lalibela (100 km, 3–4 hours) or Weldiya (120 km, 3 hours). A 4WD vehicle is strongly recommended, especially in the rainy season (June–September) when roads can become impassable.

The town is compact and walkable. For trips to outlying rock churches, a 4WD vehicle and local guide are essential.

What are the things to do?

  • Wag Hemra rock churches: Several small, ancient rock-hewn churches in the surrounding countryside, carved in the same tradition as Lalibela but without the crowds.

  • Sekota Market: A traditional highland market serving the remote communities of Wag Hemra.

  • Mountain scenery: The highland landscape around Sekota is dramatic, with deep valleys and eucalyptus-covered slopes.

  • Rock-church tour: Visit the lesser-known churches of Wag Hemra with a local guide — they offer an intimate alternative to Lalibela.

  • Highland trekking: The area has excellent potential for walking and trekking through traditional villages.
