Weldiya (also spelled Woldia) is a strategically located town in the Amara Region of north-eastern Ethiopia, at the crossroads of roads leading to Lalibela, Mekelle, and Dessie. It is the administrative centre of the North Wollo Zone and an important stop for travellers. The town sits in a valley surrounded by the highlands of Wollo at about 2,100 m elevation.

Weldiya has a lively market and a steady flow of travellers passing through on their way to the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela or north to Tigrai.

By Plane

Nearest major airports: Lalibela (LLI IATA) is 140 km south-west, Kombolcha (DSE IATA) is 130 km south. Ethiopian Airlines serves both from Addis Ababa.

By Car / Road

Weldiya is at the junction where the road from Dessie splits — north to Mekelle and west to Lalibela. It is 120 km north of Dessie (2.5 hours) and 140 km north-east of Lalibela (4 hours). Buses from Addis Ababa, Mekelle, and Lalibela all pass through.

The town is compact and walkable. Bajajs serve the main streets and the bus station.
