Gondar
Amara, Ethiopia
Why visit Gondar?
Gondar is a historic city in northern Ethiopia, capital of the Amara Region, renowned for its well-preserved 17th-century castles and palaces. Known as the "Camelot of Africa," it served as the capital of the Ethiopian Empire from 1636 to the mid-19th century under Emperor Fasilidas and his successors.
The city sits at an elevation of about 2,200 m in the highlands north of Lake Tana. Its rich architectural heritage, including numerous medieval churches and the iconic Fasil Ghebbi castle compound, make it one of Ethiopia's most important historical destinations.
