Metema

Amara, Ethiopia

Why visit Metema?

Metema is a border town in the Amara Region of north-western Ethiopia, located at the busiest crossing point between Ethiopia and Sudan (Gallabat on the Sudanese side). It is a major trade corridor for agricultural exports — especially sesame seeds, coffee, and gum arabic — moving from Ethiopia to Sudan and onward to Port Sudan.

The town has a distinct frontier character, with a mix of Ethiopian highland culture and Sudanese influences. The border is open to travellers, though a Sudanese visa must be obtained in advance.
