Benue State is a fertile, agriculturally rich state in central-eastern Nigeria, named after the Benue River — the country's second-largest river — which flows through the state from east to west. Its capital, Makurdi, straddles the Benue River and is a major transport hub with a rail bridge that once carried the country's main north-south railway. The state is known as the "Food Basket of the Nation," producing yams, cassava, rice, soybeans, and the much-celebrated Benue yam.
The Tiv people are the dominant ethnic group, alongside the Idoma and Igede. The state's cultural landscape is marked by the Tiv iyough (traditional meeting lodges) with their distinctive black-and-white geometric murals, and by vibrant yam festivals that celebrate the harvest. The landscape is predominantly flat and fertile, with the Benue River floodplains supporting intensive agriculture and the scenic hills of the Kwande and Oju areas providing contrast.
Travel in Benue is defined by its position as a crossroads between the north and south. The Makurdi Bridge carries the main road and rail link between northern and southern Nigeria. The state is safe and welcoming, with the best time to visit being during the dry season for the Yam Festival and the harvest markets.
When is the best time to visit?
The dry season (November–March) is best for travel and festivals. The rainy season (April–October) is heavy, with the Benue River flooding its banks between August and October. The Yam Festival and the Igede International Carnival (both around November–December) are the state's flagship events.

Makurdi is the main transport hub. The Makurdi Railway Station provides passenger services on the Port Harcourt–Kano line. Major roads connect Makurdi to Otukpo (1 hr), Gboko (45 mins), and Katsina-Ala (2 hrs). Buses and shared taxis run frequently from Makurdi to all major towns. Within towns, motorcycle taxis (okada) and tricycles are the main local transport.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Benue's cuisine reflects the state's agricultural wealth. Yams are central: pounded yam with egusi (melon seed) soup, yam porridge (asaro), and fried yam are staples. The famous Benue yam is celebrated during the Yam Festival. Other specialties include ruam (a Tiv dish of pounded yam with vegetables), nohwe (groundnut soup), and apuu (millet beer). Benue rice, soybeans, and fresh river fish from the Benue River are also highly prized.
What is the culture like?
The Yam Festival (Isole Uta/Tyoor) is the most important festival among the Tiv, celebrated in November–December with feasting, music, and thanks for the harvest. The Igede International Carnival (December) is a colourful event with parades, masquerades, and traditional performances. The Tiv iyough (meeting lodges) with their black-and-white geometric murals are unique architectural and artistic landmarks.
