Why visit Gboko?

Gboko is a town in central Benue State, the traditional headquarters of the Tiv people. It is the seat of the Tor Tiv, the paramount traditional ruler of the Tiv nation, and is one of the most culturally significant towns in the state. Gboko is an agricultural centre, surrounded by farms producing yams, cassava, and soybeans.

The climate is tropical with a rainy season from April to October. The dry season (November–March) is the best time to visit.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Makurdi Airport (MDI), about 50 km south.

By Train

No passenger rail service. The nearest station is in Makurdi.

By Car / Road

Gboko is on the main Makurdi–Katsina-Ala road. Buses and shared taxis from Makurdi take about 45 mins.

Motorcycle taxis and tricycles are the main local transport.

Where to eat?

Tiv cuisine features pounded yam with various soups, roasted yam, and ruam — pounded yam with vegetables. Fresh river fish is also a specialty.

Where to drink?

Apuu (millet beer) is the traditional Tiv drink. Soft drinks and beer are widely available.
