Why visit?

Bayelsa State is a coastal state in the Niger Delta region of southern Nigeria, one of the country's smallest states by land area but one of its most significant for oil and gas production. Its capital, Yenagoa, is a fast-growing city on the Ekole River. The state was created in 1996 from the western half of Rivers State and is the homeland of the Ijaw people, one of Nigeria's largest ethnic groups.

The landscape is defined by the Niger Delta's intricate web of rivers, creeks, and mangrove swamps, with the Atlantic Ocean forming its southern boundary. Oloibiri, in Bayelsa, is the historic site where oil was first struck in commercial quantities in Nigeria in 1956 — an event that transformed the country's economy. The state is crisscrossed by waterways, and boat travel is as common as road transport.

Bayelsa is best known for its aquatic culture: the Ijaw people's life revolves around the creeks, and the state's famous carnival, the Bayelsa Christmas Carnival, draws visitors from across Nigeria. The best time to visit is the dry season (November–March), when the waters are calmer and roads more passable.

When is the best time to visit?

The dry season (November–March) is ideal. The rainy season (April–October) brings heavy rainfall, flooding, and difficult road conditions. The Bayelsa Christmas Carnival (December) and the Seigbein Festival (March) are major events.

What should you eat?

Bayelsa's cuisine is based on fresh seafood and root vegetables. Fufu (cassava) and Garri are staples, served with Banga Soup (palm nut soup), Owho Soup (a rich Ijaw soup with fresh fish and periwinkles), and Pepper Soup with fresh catfish or prawns. Starch (from cassava) is a local Ijaw specialty served with Banga or Owho soup.

What is the culture like?

The Bayelsa Christmas Carnival (December) is a month-long celebration with parades, concerts, and street parties. The Seigbein Festival (March) is a traditional Ijaw masquerade festival.
