Why visit?

Lazio is a central region of Italy, best known as the home of Rome—the Eternal City and capital of the Roman Empire. While Rome alone could occupy months of exploration, Lazio offers much more beyond the capital. The region stretches from the Tyrrhenian coast inland to the Apennine mountains, encompassing volcanic lakes, Etruscan ruins, medieval hill towns, and a coastline of sandy beaches backed by excellent seafood restaurants.

The region is characterized by its diverse landscapes: the rolling hills of the Sabine countryside, the volcanic lakes of Bolsena and Bracciano, the dramatic cliff-top villages of southern Lazio, and the Pontine Islands offshore. Lazio has been continuously inhabited for millennia, leaving layers of Roman, Etruscan, medieval, and Renaissance heritage throughout its territory.

Beyond Rome, the region rewards travelers with fascinating Etruscan necropolises at Cerveteri and Tarquinia, Renaissance gardens at Tivoli, atmospheric medieval towns like Calcata and Civita di Bagnoregio, and a wine industry of very long standing. The Mediterranean climate—hot, dry summers and mild winters—makes it pleasant to visit year-round.

When is the best time to visit?

The best months to visit Lazio are April through June and September through October. Spring brings pleasant temperatures (18-25°C) ideal for exploring both Rome and the countryside, with wildflowers blooming across the hills. Autumn offers mild weather and the grape harvest season, with numerous food and wine festivals.

Summer (July-August) is hot, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C in Rome and the coastal areas. The beaches at Sperlonga, Gaeta, and Terracina are at their busiest. Winter is mild along the coast but can be cold in the mountainous interior around Rieti. The Pontine Islands are best visited May through September.

Easter week brings major religious celebrations to Rome, with processions and papal events. The Estate Romana festival runs throughout summer with outdoor concerts, cinema, and cultural events across Rome.

How do you get around?

Lazio has an excellent rail network centered on Rome, with most routes running north-south. High-speed trains connect Rome to major Italian cities. Regional trains serve Viterbo, Rieti, Frosinone, and the coastal towns. The A1 motorway connects Rome northward to Florence and southward to Naples, while the A12 follows the coast toward Tuscany.

From Rome's airports at Fiumicino and Ciampino, the region is easily accessible by car via the GRA ring road. Civitavecchia port, 80km northwest of Rome, serves ferries to Sardinia, Corsica, Sicily, and Barcelona.

Distances from Rome: Viterbo is 100km north (1.5 hours by car), Tivoli 30km east (40 minutes), Frosinone 90km southeast (1 hour), Rieti 80km northeast (1.5 hours). Bus services connect smaller towns, though frequencies can be infrequent in rural areas.

What should you eat?

Roman cuisine is the heart of Lazio's food tradition, with iconic dishes including cacio e pepe (pecorino and black pepper pasta), carbonara (eggs, guanciale, pecorino), amatriciana (guanciale, tomato, pecorino), and alla gricia. Supplì (fried rice balls) and carciofi alla giudia (Jewish-style fried artichokes) are beloved street foods.

The region's cuisine extends beyond Rome. The coast offers exceptional seafood, particularly at Gaeta, Sperlonga, and Anzio. The Castelli Romani are famous for frascati wine and porchetta (roast suckling pig). In the mountains around Rieti, hearty dishes feature lamb, truffles, and mountain cheeses.

Traditional products include pecorino romano cheese, guanciale (cured pork jowl), and salame from various towns. Lazio's wine industry is well-reputed, with whites from Frascati and reds from the Cesanese grape in southern Lazio.

What is the culture like?

Lazio hosts major cultural events throughout the year. The Estate Romana (June-September) brings outdoor concerts, film screenings, and festivals to venues across Rome. The Rome Film Festival (October-November) attracts international cinema at the Auditorium Parco della Musica.

Religious festivals are central to Lazio's culture, especially Easter celebrations in Rome with the Pope's Way of the Cross at the Colosseum. The Infiorata flower festival in Genzano (June) carpets streets with elaborate petal designs. Nemi's Strawberry Festival (June) celebrates the town's famous tiny strawberries.

The region's artistic heritage spans from Etruscan tomb paintings to Renaissance masterpieces. Traditional crafts include ceramics from various towns and the art of pasta-making that defines Roman culinary culture.
