Anzio
Lazio, Italy
Why visit Anzio?
The city was the site of a significant Allied landing during World War II prior to the march on Rome. In January 1944 troops landed behind the German lines at Anzio, but defences were well organised, and a breakthrough was not actually achieved until May. Anzio was heavily damaged and has since been extensively rebuilt.

The Villa Imperiale di Nerone, a 1st-century AD imperial villa built for Emperor Nero, overlooks the sea and includes the adjacent Grotte di Nerone (Nero's Caves), once used as villa storerooms. The Museo Civico Archeologico, in the historic Villa Adele, displays artifacts from ancient Anzio and shares its space with a museum on the 1944 Allied landings.
