Bagnaia
Lazio, Italy
Why visit Bagnaia?
Bagnaia is a hamlet (frazione) of Viterbo, in the Tuscia area of northern Lazio. It is known for Villa Lante, one of Italy's most celebrated 16th-century Mannerist gardens, built as a summer residence for the bishops of Viterbo. Construction began in 1511 and was largely completed around 1566 under Cardinal Gianfrancesco Gambara, with a design attributed to the architect Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola. The property now belongs to the Italian state.

Villa Lante is the principal sight: a pair of near-identical twin casini (Palazzina Gambara and Palazzina Montalto) set above an elaborate terraced garden of fountains, cascades, and grottoes, with water features engineered by the Sienese hydraulics specialist Tommaso Ghinucci.
