Good to Know

Rail passes cover the journeys

A Swiss Travel Pass handles all travel inside Switzerland and an EU rail pass covers inter-city legs and reservation fees, so most city-to-city and day-trip trains are already included.

Eurostar links London and Paris

The London-Paris leg is by Eurostar under the Channel into Gare du Nord — book well ahead, as fares rise sharply close to travel.

Visas: two systems

The UK sits outside the Schengen Area, so this route needs both a UK visa and a Schengen visa covering France, Switzerland, Germany and Italy. Apply early.

Vatican & church dress code

St Peter's Basilica and the Vatican enforce a strict dress code — shoulders and knees must be covered for entry. Carry a scarf or light layer.

Alpine weather and layers

Jungfraujoch and the Pilatus summit are cold and snowy year-round even in early autumn. Pack warm layers, sunglasses and sturdy shoes for the high-altitude days.
