Bolsena

Lazio, Italy

Why visit Bolsena?

Bolsena is a town on the northern shore of Lake Bolsena, the largest volcanic lake in Europe, in the Viterbo province of northern Lazio. The town is best known for the Eucharistic Miracle of 1263: in the Basilica of Santa Cristina, a priest doubting the doctrine of transubstantiation reportedly witnessed a consecrated host bleed during Mass, an event associated with the origin of the Catholic feast of Corpus Christi. Above the medieval old town stands the Rocca Monaldeschi della Cervara, a fortress built in the late 13th century on behalf of Orvieto's authorities, now home to a territorial museum.
