Nemi
Lazio, Italy
Why visit Nemi?
Nemi is a small medieval hilltop town in the Castelli Romani, overlooking the volcanic Lake Nemi about 30 km from Rome. In antiquity the lake and its shores were sacred to the goddess Diana, site of the Temple of Diana Nemorensis. The emperor Caligula kept two large ceremonial ships on the lake in the 1st century AD; they were recovered from the lakebed in 1929 but were destroyed by fire in 1944. Nemi is also known today for the wild strawberries grown in the surrounding volcanic soil, celebrated each June with a strawberry festival.
