Qəbələ Rayon is one of Azerbaijan's premier tourism destinations, situated in the Greater Caucasus foothills with a stunning backdrop of snow-capped mountains. The district combines natural beauty, historical significance, and modern resort infrastructure, making it a year-round destination for domestic and international visitors.
The district capital, Qəbələ, was the ancient capital of Caucasian Albania for over 600 years. Today it is a resort town with modern hotels, a ski resort (Tufandağ), and access to the surrounding mountains. The landscape is spectacular — deep valleys, dense forests, alpine meadows, and rivers create a varied environment for outdoor activities.
The nearby village of Nij is home to the Udi people, descendants of the Caucasian Albanians, who maintain a distinct language and Christian faith. The district also includes the village of Vandam, known for its honey, and Laza, a mountain settlement at the edge of the Shahdag area.
Climate varies with elevation: the valley has warm summers (24–30 °C) and cool winters (−5 to 3 °C), while the mountains have short, cool summers and cold, snowy winters. The ski season runs from December to March.
When is the best time to visit?
Year-round: summer (June–September) for hiking, horse-riding, and mountain activities; winter (December–March) for skiing at Tufandağ; spring (May–June) for wildflowers; autumn (September–October) for foliage.
