Laza

Laza is a high-altitude village in Qəbələ District in north-central Azerbaijan, located deep in the Greater Caucasus mountains at approximately 1,500 m elevation. It is one of the most remote settlements in the district, surrounded by alpine meadows, rocky ridges, and dense forest. The village is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers seeking solitude and raw mountain scenery.

Summers are cool (14–22°C), winters harsh (−5 to 2°C) with heavy snow. The only viable season to visit is June–September.

By Plane

Qabala International Airport (GBB) about 40 km south. A taxi from the airport to Laza costs 30–40 AZN.

By Car / Road

From Qabala, drive 35 km north via Vandam and Bum (1–1.5 hr). A 4WD vehicle is essential — the road becomes a rough track. A taxi from Qabala costs 25–35 AZN.

Laza is tiny and walkable. Hiking boots are essential for the surrounding terrain.

• Greater Caucasus views — Panoramic vistas from the ridges above the village.

• Hiking — Laza is a trailhead for multi-day treks into the Greater Caucasus. A local guide is strongly recommended.

• Wild camping — The alpine meadows above the village are ideal for camping (no facilities).

There are no restaurants in Laza. Self-catering only — bring food and a stove.

There are no shops in Laza. Bring all supplies from Qabala (35 km south).

• Bum (15 km south, 30 min drive) — Lower mountain village.
• Khirkhatala (10 km east) — Another remote highland settlement.
• Qabala (35 km south, 1–1.5 hr) — Nearest town with supplies.
• Sheki (95 km east, 2.5 hr) — Silk Road town.
