Why visit Khirkhatala?

Khirkhatala is a remote mountain village in Qəbələ District in north-central Azerbaijan, situated in the Greater Caucasus at high elevation. The village is small and thinly populated, accessible only by rough roads, and offers some of the most untouched mountain scenery in the region.

Summers are cool (14–22°C), winters very cold. Access is possible only from June to September.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Qabala International Airport (GBB) about 45 km south.

By Car / Road

From Qabala, drive 40 km north via Bum and Laza (1.5–2 hr). A 4WD vehicle is essential. A taxi from Qabala costs 30–40 AZN.

Walkable. Hiking trails from the village lead into high alpine terrain.

  • Hiking and trekking — Khirkhatala is for experienced hikers. No marked trails; a guide is essential.
