Khirkhatala

Khirkhatala is a remote mountain village in Qəbələ District in north-central Azerbaijan, situated in the Greater Caucasus at high elevation. The village is small and thinly populated, accessible only by rough roads, and offers some of the most untouched mountain scenery in the region.

Summers are cool (14–22°C), winters very cold. Access is possible only from June to September.

Qabala International Airport (GBB) about 45 km south.

By Car / Road

From Qabala, drive 40 km north via Bum and Laza (1.5–2 hr). A 4WD vehicle is essential. A taxi from Qabala costs 30–40 AZN.

Walkable. Hiking trails from the village lead into high alpine terrain.

• High Caucasus scenery — Rugged peaks, alpine meadows, and isolated valleys.

• Hiking and trekking — Khirkhatala is for experienced hikers. No marked trails; a guide is essential.

• Photography — Spectacular mountain landscapes.

There are no restaurants in Khirkhatala. Self-cater with supplies brought from Qabala.

Mountain stream water (treat before drinking).

• Budget: Camping only. Bring tent and sleeping bag. 0 AZN.

Khirkhatala has no shops. Bring all supplies from Qabala (40 km south) before the trip.

• Laza (10 km west, 30 min drive) — Neighbouring high-mountain village.
• Qabala (40 km south, 1.5–2 hr) — Resort town with supplies.
• Sheki (100 km east, 2.5 hr) — Silk Road town.
