Nij

Nij is a village in Qəbələ District in north-central Azerbaijan, located about 20 km east of Qabala town. The village is famous for being the main settlement of the Udi people, descendants of the ancient Caucasian Albanians. The Udi community preserves a distinct language, culture, and Christian religious heritage. The village contains the Church of St. Elisha (Kish), one of the oldest Christian churches in the Caucasus.

The surrounding landscape is forested foothills with small farms and orchards. Summers are warm (20–28°C), winters cold (0–5°C).

Qabala International Airport (GBB) is about 25 km west. A taxi costs 15–20 AZN.

By Car / Road

From Qabala, drive 20 km east on the main road (25 min). A taxi costs 10–15 AZN. Marshrutkas from Qabala pass through.

Nij is walkable. A vehicle is useful for exploring the area.

• Udi cultural centre — A small museum and cultural centre presenting the history and traditions of the Udi people.

• Explore Udi heritage — Meet local Udi residents, learn about their language (related to ancient Caucasian Albanian), and visit the cultural centre.

• Walking in the countryside — The hills around Nij are good for short walks.

A small village café serves Azerbaijani and local Udi dishes. Mains 3–6 AZN.
