Why visit?

Plaines Wilhems is a landlocked district in the central highlands of Mauritius, forming the urban corridor that stretches from Beau Bassin and Rose Hill in the north to Curepipe in the south. It is the second most populous district on the island and the country's commercial and residential hub outside Port Louis. The district sits on the central plateau at an elevation of about 400–600 m, giving it a noticeably cooler climate than the coast.

When is the best time to visit?

Visit during the dry winter months of May to November for the most comfortable temperatures (15–25°C). The cooler highland climate means the district can be drizzly and overcast in summer (November–April). The town of Curepipe is known for frequent rain showers year-round.

What should you eat?

The towns of Plaines Wilhems offer the full spectrum of Mauritian cuisine. Rose Hill's night market is famous for grilled corn, gâteaux piments (chilli cakes), and alouda (milk-based drink with basil seeds). Quatre Bornes has excellent Indian-Mauritian restaurants serving biryani, curries, and roti. Curepipe's British colonial legacy is visible in its patisseries and tearooms.

What is the culture like?

The district's diverse population celebrates all of Mauritius's major festivals. The Cavadee festival (January/February), a Tamil celebration of penance and devotion, is particularly prominent in Quatre Bornes. The town of Beau Bassin hosts the colourful Ganga Snan festival.
