Why visit Vacoas?

Vacoas is a residential town in the Plaines Wilhems District of central Mauritius, situated on the central plateau at around 400 m elevation. It is one of the larger towns in the district, known for the Vacoas Dam, a large reservoir that supplies water to the region. The town has a relaxed, suburban feel with some local shops and markets.

How do you get there?

Vacoas is located along the A1 motorway, about 5 km south of Phoenix and 5 km north of Curepipe. Buses from Port Louis, Curepipe, and Quatre Bornes stop frequently at the Vacoas bus station. Taxis are readily available.

The town is compact and walkable in the centre. Buses and taxis connect Vacoas to neighbouring towns. The Metro Express light rail has a station in nearby Phoenix.

What are the things to do?

The Vacoas Dam and its surrounding parkland offer a pleasant walking circuit popular with joggers and families. The Vacoas Market sells fresh produce, clothing, and household goods. The Holy Family Church is a local landmark.

Walking or jogging around the Vacoas Dam is a popular weekend activity. The town has a few gyms and sports clubs.

Where to eat?

Vacoas has a handful of local Creole and Indian restaurants serving curries, farata, and dholl puri. There are also several fast-food outlets near the main road.

Local cafés serve Mauritian tea and fresh fruit juices. Alcohol is available at restaurants and supermarkets.

Where to stay?

Vacoas has very limited accommodation — a few self-catering apartments and guesthouses (MUR 1,000–2,500 per night). Most visitors stay in Curepipe (5 km south) or coastal areas and visit Vacoas as a day trip. The nearby Phoenix area offers more business-oriented hotels.

What should you buy?

Vacoas Market (Wednesday and Saturday) is good for fresh fruit, vegetables, and local snacks. There are also several small supermarkets and convenience stores.

Where to go next?

Curepipe (5 km south) — Trou aux Cerfs volcano and craft shopping. Phoenix (5 km north) — shopping centres and the Metro Express connection to Port Louis. Quatre Bornes (3 km west) — bustling Monday market.
