Bonriki

Bonriki is a settlement on the southeastern side of Tarawa Atoll, part of the municipality of South Tarawa. It is best known as the location of Bonriki International Airport, one of only two international airports in Kiribati and the primary gateway for visitors to the Gilbert Islands. The village lies near Temwaiku and Bikenibeu, connected to the rest of South Tarawa by a continuous causeway road. The area has a tropical maritime climate with consistently warm temperatures year-round (27–32°C). The wettest period is from November to April, while May to October is drier with prevailing easterly trade winds.

Bonriki International Airport (TRW) is located directly in Bonriki and is the main international gateway to Kiribati. Fiji Airways operates flights from Nadi (Fiji), and Nauru Airlines connects from Nauru and Majuro. The airport is a short walk or taxi ride from the village itself. The terminal is small but functional.

By Car / Road

Bonriki is at the eastern end of the main road that runs the length of South Tarawa, connecting to Bikenibeu, Bairiki, and Betio by causeway. Minibuses and taxis operate along this route. The drive from Bairiki (the administrative centre) takes about 20–30 minutes.

Bonriki is a small village and easily walkable. For travel to other parts of South Tarawa, shared minibuses are frequent and cheap. Taxis can be hired for private trips. The airport is within walking distance of most of the village.

• Bonriki International Airport: While small, the airport is a point of interest for aviation enthusiasts. The runway extends close to the lagoon.

• Tarawa Lagoon: The turquoise lagoon waters near Bonriki offer scenic views, especially along the airport perimeter road.

• Bikenibeu: The neighbouring settlement (2 km west) has the Kiribati Teacher's College and government facilities.

• Swim and relax: The lagoon side of Bonriki has calm waters suitable for swimming.

• Watch aircraft movements: The airport apron is visible from the roadside — a modest but interesting pastime.

• Explore nearby islets: The causeway road makes it easy to cycle or walk to neighbouring Temwaiku and Bikenibeu.

There are a few small takeaway food stalls near the airport and in the village serving fish, chicken, rice, and bubun (a local dumpling). For restaurant dining, Bikenibeu has a few basic Chinese and Kiribati eateries. Most visitors eat at their accommodation or bring supplies from Betio's supermarkets.

Coconut water and bottled drinks are available from village shops. Tap water is not potable — rely on bottled or treated rainwater. The airport's cafe serves cold drinks.

• Budget: Guesthouses in Bikenibeu and Temwaiku offer basic rooms from around 40–60 AUD per night. The Otintaai Hotel in Bikenibeu is the best-known mid-range option.
• Mid-range: Several government-run guesthouses in the Bikenibeu area cater to travellers on business, with rooms around 80–120 AUD per night.
• Upscale: No upscale accommodation exists in Bonriki itself; the nearest is the Otintaai Hotel in Bikenibeu.

Bonriki has small village shops selling basic provisions. For a wider selection of groceries, hardware, and clothing, Bikenibeu and Betio have larger stores and a market. The airport shop sells snacks, drinks, and souvenirs.

• Bairiki (12 km west, 25 min by minibus) — The administrative capital with government buildings and the National Stadium.
• Betio (15 km west, 30 min by bus) — The commercial centre of South Tarawa with the port, markets, and Chinese restaurants.
• Bikenibeu (2 km west, 5 min by taxi) — A major South Tarawa settlement with the Kiribati Teacher's College, hospital, and Otintaai Hotel.
• North Tarawa (boat from Betio) — Traditional villages and pristine lagoon beaches on the less-developed northern arm of the atoll.
