Yueyang Tower
Hunan Sheng, China
Why visit Yueyang Tower?
Yueyang Tower (Yueyang Lou) is one of the most celebrated historic towers in China, standing on the western edge of the city of Yueyang in northeastern Hunan Province, overlooking the vast Dongting Lake near where it meets the Yangtze River. Together with the Yellow Crane Tower in Wuhan and the Tengwang Pavilion in Nanchang, it is counted among the "Three Great Towers of Southern China" — landmarks immortalised in classical poetry and prose.
The tower's fame rests above all on a single piece of writing: the Song-dynasty statesman Fan Zhongyan's essay Yueyang Lou Ji ("Memorial to Yueyang Tower"), composed in 1046, whose line about being "the first to feel the world's worries and the last to enjoy its pleasures" is known to virtually every educated Chinese person. The site has had a tower since the Tang dynasty; the present three-storey timber structure, with its distinctive helmet-shaped roof, follows the form of Qing-dynasty reconstruction. Today Yueyang Tower anchors a riverside scenic park that includes gardens, pavilions and a stretch of the old city wall, and it is a place of cultural pilgrimage as much as a viewpoint.
The visit is essentially a half-day cultural outing rather than a multi-day destination. Hunan has a humid subtropical climate: spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, summers are hot and humid, and winters are cool and damp. Clear days reward the climb with sweeping views over the misty expanse of Dongting Lake. Expect crowds on weekends and during Chinese public holidays.

By Plane
The nearest airport is Yueyang Sanhe Airport (YYA), a small regional airport with limited domestic flights. For wider connections, Changsha Huanghua International Airport (CSX), around 150 km to the south, is the main gateway, with extensive domestic and some international routes; from Changsha, a high-speed train or expressway drive completes the journey to Yueyang.
By Train
Yueyang is well served by rail. Yueyangdong (Yueyang East) Railway Station handles high-speed trains on the busy Beijing–Guangzhou corridor, with frequent fast services to Changsha (around 30 minutes), Wuhan (under an hour) and beyond. The older Yueyang Railway Station in the city handles conventional trains and sits closer to the tower. From either station, city buses, taxis and ride-hailing reach Yueyang Tower in 15–30 minutes. Book high-speed tickets in advance during holiday periods.
By Car / Road
Yueyang lies on major expressways linking Changsha and Wuhan. By car, Changsha is roughly 1.5–2 hours to the south and Wuhan around 2 hours to the north. Long-distance and intercity buses serve Yueyang's coach stations from cities across Hunan and Hubei; from there it is a short local transfer to the tower.
Within Yueyang, getting around is straightforward by city bus, taxi and ride-hailing app (Didi is widely used). City bus fares are low — typically a few yuan — and several routes serve the Yueyang Tower scenic area on the lakefront. Taxis around the city are inexpensive. The scenic area itself, including the tower, gardens and old city wall, is explored entirely on foot. The lakeshore promenade is pleasant for walking. As elsewhere, use metered taxis or app rides and confirm any non-metered fare in advance.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to eat?
Yueyang's cooking belongs to the Hunan (Xiang) culinary tradition, famous across China for bold, fiery, sour-and-spicy flavours and liberal use of chillies and smoked ingredients. Its lakeside setting means freshwater fish features strongly — Dongting Lake fish dishes are a local highlight, and Dongting hot-and-sour fish and steamed lake fish are worth seeking out.
- Budget: noodle shops, rice eateries and street stalls in central Yueyang serve cheap, spicy local fare.
- Mid-range: restaurants specialising in Hunan home cooking and Dongting Lake fish offer hearty meals at moderate prices.
- Upscale: hotel restaurants and larger dining venues in the city centre provide the higher-end options.
Where to drink?
Tea is central here, and locally grown Junshan Silver Needle is the drink to try in its home region. Hunan also produces rice wines and baijiu (white spirit), and cold beer is the standard accompaniment to spicy meals. Cafés serving coffee are found in the city centre. Treat tap water as unsafe to drink untreated; stick to boiled or bottled water, both readily available.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to stay?
There is no accommodation within the scenic area itself; visitors stay in Yueyang city, which has the full range.
- Budget: hostels and budget guesthouses near the railway station and city centre offer simple rooms at low rates.
- Mid-range: numerous business and chain hotels across central Yueyang, including options near the lakefront, provide comfortable modern rooms.
- Upscale: higher-end hotels in the city centre and along the lake cater to the top tier, some with lake views.
What should you buy?
The signature local product is Junshan Yinzhen (Junshan Silver Needle) tea, a prized yellow tea grown on Junshan Island in Dongting Lake — a fine, packable souvenir. Yueyang and the wider Hunan region also offer dried lake fish and lotus products, embroidery, and the chilli-based preserves typical of Hunan. Tea shops, the scenic-area gift stores and city markets are the main places to buy. Bargaining is normal at street stalls and souvenir markets but not in fixed-price shops.
