Tongdao
Hunan Sheng, China
Why visit Tongdao?
Tongdao (通道) is a Dong Autonomous County in the far southwest of Hunan Province, bordering Guangxi to the south and Guizhou to the west. The full name is Tongdao Dong Autonomous County (通道侗族自治县), reflecting its status as a centre for the Dong (Kam) ethnic minority. Tongdao is renowned for its well-preserved Dong villages, characterised by distinctive wooden drum towers, wind-and-rain bridges, and stilted houses with upturned eaves. The area is also rich in karst landscapes and forested mountains.
Tongdao has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters (January 6°C) and warm summers (July 27°C). The region is lush and green year-round. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the most comfortable seasons. The Dong people are famous for their polyphonic choral singing — inscribed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage — and their architecture is among the finest ethnic minority building traditions in China.
