Xiangtan
Hunan Sheng, China
Why visit Xiangtan?
Xiangtan (湘潭) is a prefecture-level city in eastern Hunan Province, situated on the lower reaches of the Xiang River about 40 km south of Changsha. Xiangtan is best known as the birthplace of Mao Zedong (1893), the founding father of the People's Republic of China. The city has a profound place in modern Chinese history, and its primary draw is the Mao heritage sites in the nearby village of Shaoshan. Xiangtan also has a strong industrial heritage as a centre for steel production and heavy machinery manufacturing.
Xiangtan has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers (average July 29°C) and cool, damp winters (January 5°C). The best times to visit are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). The city is divided into two main urban districts — Yuhu and Yuetang — with the Xiang River flowing through the centre.
