Why visit Yiyang?

Yiyang (益阳) is a prefecture-level city in northern Hunan Province, situated on the Zi River about 90 km northwest of Changsha. Yiyang has a rich cultural heritage and is known as the "Bamboo Township of China" — the surrounding countryside is covered in bamboo groves, and the city has a long history of bamboo weaving and crafts. The area was historically an important cultural centre, producing notable scholars and writers including the Qing Dynasty statesman Tao Shu and the modern writer Zhou Libo.

Yiyang has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers (July averages 29°C) and cool, damp winters (January 5°C). Spring and autumn are pleasant. The surrounding lake region — Yiyang borders Dongting Lake to the north — creates a scenic water-town landscape of rivers, canals, and wetlands.
