Why visit Camden?
Camden is an affluent town in Knox County, Mid Coast Maine, a little over an hour north of Portland. Considered by some to be one of the most beautiful places in New England, Camden's town motto is "where the mountains meet the sea." The rolling Camden Hills run from inland right up to the ocean, creating stunning landscapes that draw visitors from around the world. The town has been a tourist destination for years and is home to some of the wealthiest individuals in Maine.
Camden experienced an economic boom in the 1990s when credit card giant MBNA placed major offices there and paid for major town renovations while providing jobs to locals. Today it is an upscale seaside community with many different shops and restaurants. The town is home to many affluent families with breathtaking estates and mansions dotting the hills and oceanside. Residents are warm and welcoming to visitors, though they appreciate tourists staying on the beaten path and respecting private neighborhoods.
The town experiences four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and pleasant, ideal for sailing, hiking, and enjoying the harbor. Fall foliage peaks in late September to early October, with spectacular views from the Camden Hills. Winter brings snow and cold temperatures, with nearby ski areas offering winter sports. Spring sees the return of boats to the harbor and blooming gardens throughout the town.
