Why visit Ellsworth?

Ellsworth is a small city in Hancock County, Down East Maine, located on the Union River. With a population of about 6,500 people, it serves as the county seat and the gateway for tourists visiting Acadia National Park, Mount Desert Island, and the Bar Harbor region. Settled in 1763, Ellsworth became a large lumber port and shipbuilding center during the 19th century. The first schooner built there, the Susan and Abigail, was launched in 1773 and carried pine shingles and oak staves to the West Indies.

Today, Ellsworth is the increasingly prosperous shopping center for Hancock County and has many historic buildings, beautiful spots, and points of interest. The city experiences a large influx of tourists from May through September, with visitors from across the United States and Canada. The local weekly newspaper, The Ellsworth American, provides information about community events and news.

Ellsworth experiences four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and pleasant, ideal for exploring Acadia and the surrounding coast. Fall foliage peaks in late September to early October, with spectacular views throughout Hancock County. Winters are cold with regular snowfall, and spring brings warming temperatures and the return of tourists. The city is easily accessible via Route 1 from Bangor (about 50 miles west) and serves as a natural stopping point for travelers heading to Mount Desert Island.
