Lubec
Maine, United States
Why visit Lubec?
Lubec is a town in the Down East region of Maine, situated on the coast at the mouth of the Bay of Fundy. It holds the distinction of being the easternmost town in the contiguous United States, making it the first place in the country to see the sunrise each day. The town is known for its rugged coastal scenery, its proximity to the Fundy National Park in New Brunswick, Canada, and its connection to the dramatic tidal phenomena of the Bay of Fundy.
Lubec's history is tied to the sardine canning industry, which once made it a bustling port town. Today, the town has a quieter character, with a small year-round population and a seasonal influx of tourists drawn to its natural beauty and unique geographical position. The town serves as a gateway to Cobscook Bay State Park, Quoddy Head State Park, and the international bridge to Campobello Island, New Brunswick, where the Roosevelt Campobello International Park preserves the summer home of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
The town experiences four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and pleasant, ideal for exploring the coast, lighthouses, and nearby parks. Fall foliage peaks in late September to early October, with beautiful views along the coast. Winters are cold with regular snowfall and strong winds from the Bay of Fundy. Spring brings warming temperatures and the return of migratory birds. The dramatic tides of the Bay of Fundy, with tidal ranges up to 20 feet, create ever-changing coastal landscapes.
