Why visit Lewiston?
Lewiston is Maine's second-largest city, with a population of 37,121 as of the 2020 Census. Located in Androscoggin County along the eastern bank of the Androscoggin River, it sits directly across from its sister city Auburn (population 24,061). Together, the two municipalities are known locally as the Twin Cities or L-A, sharing transit infrastructure, regional events, and commercial areas.
The city developed in the mid-19th century around the Great Falls of the Androscoggin, where water power fueled large cotton and textile mills including the Bates Mill Complex. Thousands of French-Canadian immigrants moved to Lewiston to work in these factories, establishing a French-speaking Franco-American community centered in the "Little Canada" neighborhood. Since 2000, thousands of Somali and Somali Bantu refugees settled in Lewiston, opening storefronts along Lisbon Street and bringing new businesses and cultural activities to the downtown district.
Lewiston experiences a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Winters (December through March) are cold and snowy, with average January highs of 29°F (-2°C), lows of 10°F (-12°C), and annual snowfall averaging 74 inches (188 cm). Summers (June through August) bring warm conditions, with average July highs around 81°F (27°C) and lows near 60°F (16°C). Annual precipitation averages 45 inches (114 cm), distributed evenly throughout the year.
