Hualien Sugar Factory

Why visit Hualien Sugar Factory?

The Hualien Sugar Factory (花蓮觀光糖廠, also known as the Guangfu Sugar Factory) is a former sugar mill in Guangfu Township, in the East Rift Valley of Hualien County, now repurposed as a heritage and leisure site. Sugar was once one of eastern Taiwan's most important industries, and the rift valley was dotted with mills processing the cane grown on the surrounding plains. When industrial sugar production wound down, the Taiwan Sugar Corporation (Taisugar) converted several of its old factories into tourist sites — and the Hualien Sugar Factory is one of the most appealing.

The site's character comes from its preserved Japanese-era buildings: rows of low wooden dormitories and offices, once home to the mill's workers, now restored and partly used as heritage guest lodging. Old industrial structures, machinery and rail relics remain on the grounds. But for most visitors, the factory is associated with one simple pleasure — ice cream: Taisugar's factory shops are famous across Taiwan for inexpensive ice cream and ice lollies, and the Hualien Sugar Factory's ice cream is its single best-known draw.

The factory makes an easy, relaxed stop on a rift-valley journey rather than a destination in itself. The climate is humid subtropical and mild; spring (March–May) and autumn (October–November) offer the most comfortable weather for wandering the grounds, while summer is hot, humid and prone to typhoons. The site is flat, open and pleasant for a leisurely visit at almost any time of year.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Hualien Airport (HUN), to the north near Hualien City. From there it is an onward train or road journey south down the rift valley to Guangfu. There is no closer airport.

By Train

The site is close to the rift-valley railway. Guangfu Station (光復車站) on the Hualien–Taitung line is the nearest stop, a short distance from the factory; from the station it is a brief taxi ride or walk. Trains connect Guangfu with Hualien City to the north and Yuli and Taitung to the south.

By Car / Road

Provincial Highway 9 runs through the rift valley and passes through Guangfu Township, making the sugar factory an easy road stop between Hualien City and the southern valley. A car or scooter gives the most flexibility. Rift-valley buses along Highway 9 also serve Guangfu.

The factory grounds are flat, compact and explored entirely on foot — the dormitories, shops, ponds and old industrial structures are all within an easy walk. Bicycles are a pleasant way to extend the visit into the surrounding Guangfu countryside, and rentals may be available locally. To reach the factory and move on through the rift valley, use the train, a car or scooter, or rift-valley buses. There is no town transport network and no particular scams; the site itself is free to enter, with charges only for individual attractions and food.

What are the things to do?

  • Japanese-era wooden dormitories — Restored rows of low wooden worker housing from the colonial period, the most atmospheric part of the site; some are used as heritage guest lodging. Free to wander the grounds.

  • Old sugar mill structures and machinery — Preserved industrial buildings, equipment and rail relics recalling the factory's working past.

  • Factory grounds and ponds — Landscaped open space with ponds and shaded paths, pleasant for a relaxed stroll.

  • Eat the famous ice cream — The signature thing to do: queue at the Taisugar ice cream shop for inexpensive ice cream and ice lollies in a range of flavours.

  • Stroll the heritage dormitory rows — Wander the restored Japanese-era buildings and learn about the site's sugar-making history.

  • Cycle the surrounding countryside — Ride out from the factory into Guangfu's rift-valley farmland.

  • Use it as a rift-valley rest stop — Break a north–south valley journey here for a snack, a walk and a look at the heritage buildings.

  • Stay overnight in the dormitories — Book a room in the converted heritage lodging for a quiet, characterful night in the rift valley.

Where to eat?

Food at the sugar factory centres on the famous ice cream and light snacks rather than full meals.

  • Budget — The Taisugar ice cream shop and snack stalls on site sell ice cream, ice lollies and light bites at low prices.
  • Budget–mid — Small eateries in and around Guangfu town serve rice and noodle dishes and rift-valley home cooking.

For a fuller meal, eat in Guangfu town or in the larger rift-valley towns of Hualien County. Vegetarian eating is straightforward in this farming region — look for the "素" sign in nearby towns. Halal and certified gluten-free options are very limited; plan ahead.

Where to drink?

The factory shop and on-site stalls sell coffee, tea, bubble tea and cold drinks alongside the ice cream. Convenience stores in Guangfu town cover beer and soft drinks. Tap water in Taiwan is treated and considered safe once boiled; most visitors drink bottled or filtered water.

Where to stay?

  • Budget–mid — The factory's restored Japanese-era heritage dormitories are let as guest accommodation, offering a characterful stay in the old wooden worker housing; rates are moderate.
  • Mid-range — Guesthouses and B&Bs in Guangfu Township and the surrounding rift valley run roughly NT$2,000–3,500 per night.
  • Upscale — There are few genuinely upscale options at the factory itself; for higher-comfort lodging, look to hot-spring hotels and resorts elsewhere in the rift valley or in Hualien City.

What should you buy?

The obvious buys are sugar-related products — Taisugar sells sugar, ice cream and related sweets and snacks at its factory shop, plus souvenirs. Local rift-valley farm produce may also be on sale. The factory shop is the main retail point on site; for a wider selection, Guangfu town and the larger rift-valley towns have shops and markets. Prices are fixed; bargaining is not customary in Taiwan.

Where to go next?

  • Guangfu town — Adjacent to the factory; a small rift-valley township and gateway to nearby wetlands.
  • Mataian Wetland — Near Guangfu; an Amis wetland known for traditional palakaw fishing and aquatic plants.
  • Ruisui — A short drive/train ride south; hot springs, dairy ranches and river rafting.
  • Hualien City — About 50–60 km / 1–1.5 hours north; the regional hub and base for Taroko Gorge.
  • Yuli — South down the rift valley; a farming township and gateway to the Walami Trail.
  • Liushidan Mountain — Farther south; famous for its August–September daylily bloom.
