Fenglin

Hualien, Taiwan

Why visit Fenglin?

Fenglin (鳳林) is a rural township in central Hualien County, positioned between the Central Mountain Range and the Coastal Mountain Range in Taiwan's East Rift Valley. In 2014, it became Taiwan's first town certified by Cittaslow International (the Slow City organization), recognized for preserving rural lifestyle and traditions. Over 60% of the township's 10,000 residents belong to the Hakka ethnic group, making Fenglin a center of Hakka community life in eastern Taiwan.

The town grew during the Japanese colonial era in the early 20th century as an agricultural settlement named Hayashida (林田). Development from that era remains visible across the valley, including wooden officers' quarters, forestry railways at Lintianshan, and brick Osaka-style tobacco barns built for curing tobacco leaf crops. Fenglin is also known in Taiwan for producing over 100 school principals, which led to the establishment of a local museum dedicated to education.

Fenglin has a humid subtropical climate shaped by its valley location. Summers (June through September) are hot and humid, with daytime temperatures averaging 28°C to 33°C (82°F to 91°F) alongside heavy afternoon rainfall and occasional typhoons. Winters (December through February) bring cooler, drier conditions with temperatures averaging 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F). Late autumn (October and November) brings lower humidity and moderate warmth.
