Villa del Rosario

San Pedro, Paraguay

Why visit Villa del Rosario?

Villa del Rosario is a district on the western side of San Pedro department, on the bank of the Paraguay River about 225 km from Asunción. It was founded on 14 June 1787 by order of governor-intendant Pedro Melo de Portugal under the name San José de Ybyracapá (also recorded as San José del Yvyracapá y Puesto de Kuarepotí), with commander Roque Acosta formally distributing and marking out the town's land among its first residents. The district's current name honors an early image of the Virgin of the Rosary held by the Caballero de Añasco family, and it is still sometimes referred to in full as Villa del Rosario del Kuarepotí.
