Capiibary

San Pedro, Paraguay

Why visit Capiibary?

Capiibary is a district in San Pedro department, over 235 km from Asunción and reached via Route PY03. It sits on the Capiibary stream, near the border with Caaguazú department; the name comes from Classical Guaraní capiĭbá·r ("capybara") + ĭ ("water/river"), reflecting the abundance of capybaras once found there. The district's terrain is higher and more forested than much of San Pedro, including the Sierra de San Joaquín range and the Cerro Dos de Oro elevation. It was formally established as a district on 25 March 1993 and has a population of roughly 30,600 (2022 census), most of whom rely on subsistence agriculture. The climate is notably rainy and humid year-round, with relative humidity typically 70–80%.
